This is the basic entry-level competence you need to work on the railway. This allows you to undertake various job roles, provided they do not involve you interfering with the rail infrastructure. Most employers will require you to hold this competence prior to offering a position. The PTS course is comprised of two components. There is E-learning, followed by two days of classroom and practical training for AC and DCCR. Successful completion of the E-learning assessment is required prior to attendance on the practical training day. The aim of the course is to instruct delegates on correctly determining their responsibilities and duties when working on or near the line and demonstrate their understanding and ability to follow a Safe System of Work.

How long does this competency last?

The PTS competence is valid for 2 years, thereafter a one-day PTS re-certification must be completed. Please note that the re-certification needs to be completed within 56 days of the PTS expiry date, if not, the PTS Initial will need to be completed again.

Additional Information

Holding the PTS competency allows you to access Network Rail sites, however, it does not allow you to touch the railway infrastructure. You may work all other jobs that don’t require you to interfere with the rail infrastructure such as vegetation, general labour, etc. Those who wish to carry out track engineering or maintenance must have also successfully completed the Track Induction training.
