Firstly you should have a sponsor; this is usually the company that you will be working for who pays you. You must have a sponsor to be able to join the rail industry. If you have not got a sponsor yet but still want to be trained then please contact a member of our staff to discuss the options on 02074761111.
Yes, and this must be done before you attend a training session with us. You must bring your certificates with you or arrange for a good copy to be sent here. Obviously the results must be negative for drugs/alcohol.
No unfortunately your local doctor cannot do the medical and D&A test. As it is a mandatory requirement for the rail industry, only railway approved medical centres are qualified to carry out the screening tests. If you would like to be tested at our centre, please call our bookings team on 0207476111 for an appointment.

No, you must have passed the tests and we need to see the certificates before you sit a course. It’s a mandatory requirement that we can see you are medically fit before we take you onto a railway line, which is part of the training.

If you look at the ‘Calender’ link from our home page you will see that we run PTS initial and PTS re-certification courses most weeks. Please note, your space will only be confirmed after we have received all the relevant paperwork including your booking form signed by your sponsor and full payment.
PTS initial course duration is only 2 days long. However if your job requires you to work on the railway line itself and affect the geometry as a track man, then you will probably need the additional training of Track Induction.
The Track Induction course is a ten-day training event, which includes the PTS if not already completed. It includes; Company Induction, First Aid, Manual Handling, Fire Safety Awareness, Track Formation and Drainage, Construction and Components, Geometry, Tools and Equipment, Maintenance , Off Track and Vegetation, Extremes of Weather. Also there are lots of practical demonstrations and sessions included in this course at our practical training site.
If you do not already have a sentinel card with an up to date medical then bring yourmedical certificate. If you have had a new medical and D&Ascreen please bring that as well. We will need to see your current sentinel card if you have one. If the course involves a practical session then you will be provided with basic personnel protective equipment. If you are attending a re-cert course then any rulebooks and hand book modules that are relevant, and your completed logbook will be required.
Personnel Protective Equipment. Railway workers must wear Orange high visibility clothing including trousers and top. Safety boots (steel toe caps), and a hard hat which for new trainees should be coloured blue. For more experienced workers this can be white. Your sponsor should supply your PPE. We can supply it for initial training if you do not have any yet.
Yes, tea and coffee facilities are free of charge. Regarding food, we have a café within our premises, which stocks hot and cold food and snacks. You are more then welcomed to bring your own food with you.
We advise all delegates not to travel to the venue by car unless completely necessary as parking is restricted. Please note, if you do decide to travel by car, you are responsible for arranging your own parking off-site, please ensure you plan your journey accordingly. No, this does not create a problem for us and you should not worry about it. At Tec Training (GB) Ltd all of our trainers are fully qualified and most of us have taught at schools and colleges with years of experience. Please tell us if you have a real anxiety about reading and writing and we will endeavor to help you understand the theory with additional support.
You will receive some training material on most courses for you to keep and take home. We try to cover every individual’s learning needs, so we use a variety of methods and media to ensure everybody can relax and absorb the information.

If you employ banksmen or other staff to direct the manoeuvring, loading and unloading of vehicles, then the HSE requires that they are properly trained. Staff must have a good understanding of how to signal and communicate information to drivers entering, reversing, manoeuvring or leaving your premises.
The Traffic Banksman is sometimes referred to as Traffic Marshal or Vehicle Banksman. The role covers responsibility for supervising vehicles and pedestrians safely on a site while vehicles are moving.

Every student has access to guidance and help from our dedicated, professional and multilingual support team. Oral tests are also available to ensure that candidates with learning difficulties or disabilities can also access the training and achieve success.
We offer the flexibility to have courses delivered at any site, including your workplace (providing there is a suitable classroom type space for the theory), at our own premises or at another selected local venue. In order to have training delivered at your site we need a minimum of 6 delegates to attend and outside space suitable to reverse a vehicle.
There are no plans to use CSCS or incorporate into the WSSI; both competencies are to be kept separate. The WSSI assessment requires the individual to prove competence rather than simply recalling what was learnt from the induction.
Once the individual is confident with the material, their Sponsor can apply for them to take the Competence Assessment at an RTAS-accredited training centre. If they pass, the WSSI competence will be recorded on their Sentinel record. The individual can use their smartcard on site to prove WSSI competence.
The WSSI competence will need to be re-certified every 60 months. This has been validated in line with the new assurance regimes being implemented from June 2014.
No. In order to maintain consistency the e-learning package provides the individual with all the information and training required before taking the assessment.
Yes. Both courses have been designed to reduce the amount of overlap in content. The WSSI is different from PTS. WSSI is a general induction for CDM-style works for London Underground, whereas PTS is for Network Rail.
There are no current plans by Network Rail to make the WSSI competence mandatory. The WSSI has been created for the industry and as such Network Rail would expect all Principal Contractors working on or around the rail infrastructure to adopt it.
Yes, the Sentinel Scheme Rules apply to all individuals holding a Sentinel card and to all Sponsors, however there are certain exceptions for Sponsors who are Non Trackside Sponsors and who do not put individuals to work trackside (see Trackside Sponsor Rules on the Sponsor Support Page).
The WSSI e-learning induction is free of charge. Assessment Centres will make a charge per assessment undertaken. There is not a set charge for this, and each Assessment Centre will set their own rate, but we would expect the cost to be around £75-£90 per head.
If a business only requires WSSI competency staff, it would only need to register and complete the non-trackside declaration. There is a random audit involved – which is a percentage sample to test compliance (this audit cost is included in the fee for the declaration). There is no need to do an IMR audit or such like, which is contrary to the reason this sponsorship route was created.
No, if your already a trackside sponsor, you don’t need to do anything as you will be able to ‘sponsor’ delegates for the WSSI training. The non-tracker process is an ‘entry point’ to use Sentinel, and allows businesses with just WSSI holders to sponsor staff. If your workers need a PTS card then you will have to follow the Trackside Rules. Visit the Sentinel website for more information.
